In this unit, students will learn that:

  • ecosystems can be characterized by their living and nonliving components
  • the solar system is composed of the sun, planets (including Earth), and moons
  • the path of a planet around the sun is affected b the gravitational attraction between the sun and the planet
  • the earth orbits the sun in one year
  • the earth rotates on its axis once approximately every 24 hours
  • space exploration is the travel through our solar system using space technology to learn more about it
  • astronautical engineers design rockets and spacecraft for space exploration using the Engineering Design Process
  • robots are machines that follow instructions to complete a task
  • robots are used as astronauts' assistants, and can even handle some of the riskier work outside of the space shuttle
  • special attention is paid to robots' thumbs, pointers, and middle fingers to ensure dexterity and precision in handling tools

Total: 4 to 6 hours of instruction
